Marcabian Lore, Part I
According to common Marcabian lore, the ancient founders of the Marcabian culture are referred to as “The Great Ones” who once roamed freely throughout the vast reaches of space, and had the ability to pass unencumbered through the hidden portals to the “Land Beyond” (the land of their forefathers), and back again as they so desired.
There was a war in “Heaven”, and many were cast out of that place, into our reality, where they are destined to spend eternity. The “Keys” to the portals were obscured, and the maps of their locations and passageways were hidden away in a secret place. Over time, the location of that secret place was “lost” and “forgotten”. The portals were thus “barred” from passage long ago, and remain so to this day.
There is now a “Dark Lord” who sits upon the throne of “Heaven” and keeps the portals and their keys hidden from all except the most enlightened and worthy, and who may only approach “Him” after passing certain “tests” administered by the hidden “Keepers of the Gates”.
What those tests are, and how one goes about taking these secret “tests” is unknown to the average person on Marcab, and thus speculation and intentional disinformation from a higher level fill the vacuum.
This whole “story”, due to the disinformation campaign, is typically portrayed within Marcabian society, as “folk lore”, or stories for the “unenlightened”, “common” man.
A topic of lively discussion in certain circles of Marcabian society by “researchers” however, is that the above “story” is actually true, and based on historical fact, and that there really are “Keepers of the Gates”. It is also speculated that these “Keepers” do in-fact deny or allow access to the hidden portals to certain individuals of their choosing, even in present time.
Of course the groups which “discuss” or “research” this topic are heavily infiltrated and controlled by a higher level VAB.

On a slightly higher level in Marcabian society, it is known that the above is true, and that the “Keepers of the Gates” do indeed exist in present time, and administer the “tests”.
One of those “tests” is a keeping of “The Secret of the Maps”. That secret being: that the maps still exist, and are possessed by certain individuals to this day in a hidden location. This “secret” (that the maps do exist) is known only in the upper “levels” of the structured Marcabian society, and knowledge of this fact is kept from the “lower” levels through the use of denial, and ridicule of any who would publicly assert knowledge of their existence.
One of the lures used in the secretive upper levels of the Marcabian society is to be allowed to “Gaze upon The Maps”. This is done with certain individuals who have proven their loyalty and obedience to “The Brotherhood”.
The “Gazing upon The Maps” is allowed for a certain length of time, but no longer, that period of time being determined by “The Keeper of the Maps” at the time a new initiate is being allowed to view them. The “Gazing” is allowed to continue until the moment the initiate has the realization that these ARE “The Maps”, but absolutely no longer. As soon as the initiate has had this realization, the “portals” (the name of the hinged covers of the container) are immediately closed and locked (very symbolically) by the “Keeper of The Maps”, with the “Sacred Keys”.
Thus is continued loyalty and obedience enticed, like a carrot on a string, from the new initiate into the “Inner Circle” of The Brotherhood, and thus is the viewpoint of being “elevated” or “superior” to others cultivated.

There are many “levels” in The Brotherhood, however, and there are secrets within secrets within secrets.
One of the “secrets” of a higher level in The Brotherhood is that The Maps are actually incomplete…
